On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration gave its approval for the fecal transplant-based therapy developed by Switzerland-based Ferring Pharmaceuticals. The therapy called Rebyota was developed to target Clostridium difficile, a superbug responsible for infections that can cause serious and life-threatening diarrhea.

Although rebyota is the first therapy of its kind approved by the FDA for recurrent C. difficile infections, fecal microbiota transplants, categorized as an investigational therapy, have long been the standard of care in the U.S.

Rebyota is delivered through an enema, which works by replenishing good gut bacteria through samples of microbes distilled from the feces of healthy donors.
